Deep tech is a product of fundamental science and innovative engineering. Deep technologies typically disrupt the existing market and because they offer new infrastructures that enable applications and products that will make a new, differentiated, and visible impact on people’s lives. Deep tech creates new technical foundations that can be leveraged to produce monumental and meaningful solutions.

What is the difference between technology and deep tech?

Although the term has been elaborated on by tech moguls, it may not be common knowledge to the general public. But almost everyone in this day and age has an understanding of what technology is in one form or another. The differences between the two categories of technology can unlock some key information about what makes deep tech so unique.

Ingenuity

Broadly speaking, all technologies employ some scientific and practical knowledge to create products that are made to help various people. However most products are often strongly rooted in similar underlying technologies and after enough iterations, they all start to seem too similar. A great example of this is some mobile applications, especially social media applications. A simple search on Crunchbase suggests there are almost 42,000 social media apps in the marketplace. Although simple ideas can be good ideas, simple technology using basic knowledge cannot create completely novel solutions to people’s problems.

Deep tech, on the other hand, creates new capabilities that can enable completely new use cases to users. It uses groundbreaking engineering and science along with extensive research to provide transformative applications for tech users. One example of deep tech would have been the internet back in the 90s. The internet at some point was only a protocol developed by very technical contributors in the government. The internet and all of its complexity eventually enabled a new world of applications we all enjoy today on our PCs, smartphones, and TVs. Solving scientific or engineering problems gathers knowledge that is hard to reproduce or is not seen in prior technology. The process of engineering rebuilding new machines/systems is what makes deep tech both a challenge and revolutionary. It is in many ways the key to our future.

Creators and users

Technologies can be created by individuals, universities, companies, and so on. If you can get your hands on the right equipment and have the required knowledge then you have creative freedom. Cellphones and computer systems are now used universally and connect people to one another as well as to online information. Technology is advertised to everyone, but more specifically to younger generations.

Deep tech is created by enterprises, organizations, or startup companies offering new solutions among the market of existing technology. These creators make new products with purpose. Their time and energy are directed towards identifying issues and challenging themselves to find new and more effective solutions. Creators of deep tech are not concerned with trends, but try to address bigger issues. Existing markets are disrupted as they introduce a radically new market. Users of this tech are at the core of the products produced. This is because creative ideas are based on what the customer truly needs in order to be successful.

Some examples of deep tech

Finding innovative ways to bring novel experiences to people is what deep tech does. And this is exactly what companies are looking for. Whether it be for entertainment or business, many different company products include deep tech in order to better understand the customer and satisfy their interests or needs. Check out the several types of deep tech, and the familiar names that use it.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) combines the real world with the digital. This technology creates digital content that appears to physically occupy the space around us. Its features have been so attractive to customers that it is used in several markets. This includes practical navigation apps to incredibly interactive mobile games.

Apple

Apple is a multi-trillion dollar tech company that brings technology to life through popular products like iPhones and iPads. Apple’s structure is largely based on AR features in order to create an engaging technological space for customers to explore. It incorporates practical AR features such as a measurement tool that comes pre-downloaded on every iPhone. It is fast and easy to measure a real-life product quickly, eliminating the need to scramble for a measuring tape.

Apps can place digital images onto physical spaces, making it easier for us to visualize concepts. This can be entertaining in the form of Snapchat filters that comically distort or enhance our reality. It might also be used by professionals to design the interior of a client’s home. Virtually replacing furniture, flooring, and decor can produce a tangible model that is easier for the client to visualize.

Niantic (Pokémon go)

This company is best known for its world-altering mobile game Pokémon GO, published by Niantic and Nintendo in 2016. The game was a universal phenomenon, encouraging people to explore outdoor public spaces in order to catch virtual pokémon. Pokémon GO AR allows players to engage in battles, spin pokéstopss, and throw pokéballs to capture nearby pokémon. There are gyms and pokéstops at local landmarks or parks, requiring players to venture outdoors to engage with virtual gameplay. On occasion there can be pokémon to catch just in local neighborhoods, bringing the fantasy to players’ homes.

Augmented Reality leverages lots of deep tech, particularly in the subdisciplines of camera, chipset, and Artificial Intelligence technologies. Advanced camera sensors, lenses, at high resolutions and framerates provide the training data to computer vision algorithms that learn to understand the dynamics of the camera’s field of view. All of htis computing is done on advanced dedicated chips, especially DSPs (Digital Signal Processors) so that users can experience frictionless AR experiences on their mobile phones.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) is similar to AR in the sense that it allows us to engage with virtual worlds. A key difference is that VR fully immerses the user with a third-party device to interact with new synthetic worlds. This most commonly includes VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) and hand controls. VR can be an asset to various industries including automotive, retail, real estate, and entertainment.

What is deep tech? Oculus VR, a perfect example of virtual reality

Oculus specializes in creating VR hardware and software while partnering with third parties for VR games and experiences. Headsets are made to be lightweight and comfortable in an effort to not distract users from the immersive VR experience. It is equipped with a headset and hand controls. They release haptic vibrations or sounds when users are in a battle, interacting with creatures, or standing on a skyscraper. The user is kept immersed by these intuitive controls and equipment, making VR feel as real as our world. They have categorized their tech into two gaming platforms, Rift and Quest. This allows users to either experience VR from their PC or with the ability to freely walk around.

Marriott International

Marriott is a very well-known chain of hotels that is established in over 100 countries. It added VR in early in 2015, allowing guests to experience VRoom Service from their own hotel rooms. This is an intriguing experience for people staying at Marriott. Any guest can enjoy the VR experience by requesting a hotel VR set to their room- on loan for 24 hours. Marriott also provides VR experiences of their guest venues for other companies to view. This provides a realistic view of the space they could potentially rent out. Mariott invites guests and potential clients to experience the hotel and its additional properties through the VR experience.

Similar to AR, Virtual Reality leverages lots of deep tech to enable its experiences. VR has required substantial improvements in display, chipset, and computer vision technologies. Advanced displays with very refresh rates and pixel density took years of innovation from material scientists. Computer vision is used to track eyes and hands within the experience. Cutting edge computer vision typically requires a team of PhDs testing various models to determine the best performance for a given hardware environment.

These underlying deep technologies within AR&VR are unlocking new and novel experiences that are impossible with current mobile and web experiences.

Computer Vision

Computer vision aims to interpret physical environments, such as actions, objects, body language, faces, and more just as humans do. It is the concept of teaching technology how to interpret important information from these images.

Athena Security

Athena Security is a computer vision company making big moves in the security industry, located in Austin, Texas. Gun violence has increased, yet government action has not been made to tighten restrictions or eliminate guns as a threat. In response, there has been a demand for stricter surveillance and security service. Athena Security uses computer vision that identifies violent weapons, potential threats due to identified criminal behaviour, and other safety risks. Security alerts are sent to the buyers of the Athena service plus the police, paramedics, and other emergency contacts.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and its various branches are dedicated to enabling computers to create their own algorithms through training data that is either labeled or unlabeled. Machine learning (ML) can accompany and improve AI programs by increasing the accuracy of AI predictions. AI and ML are incredibly sophisticated technologies that can be used for various applications, from recommending users their next movie to predicting the flight pattern of various aircraft.  Finding trustworthy technology is crucial, especially in industries that rely heavily on AI predictions when making business decisions.

Google

What happens when you being typing into a Google search bar? It predicts what you are googling based off of the first few letters you type. These predictions become more specific when Google AI can base its predictions off of search history and frequently visited links. Google’s main mission is to make AI accessible and helpful to all technology users. Google AI can suggest the quickest route home, provide a list of hotels nearby, or recommend restaurants for dinner. Google AI also makes it possible for us to help one another. It might suggest changes to an email addressed to a boss or coworker. This can make all the difference in how your professional relationships develop. Google translate helps us overcome language barriers, by suggesting how our thoughts can be said in hundreds of different languages.

New AI models that are unlocking new benefits for users require advanced mathematics and incredibly vast amounts of training data. The result is groundbreaking new use cases for users.

Spotify

Spotify has become one of the most appreciated and used music streaming apps by tech users. Features that make Spotify stand out from the crowd are made possible because of its incredible AI system. Soon after downloading, it begins to understand what kind of music genres, artists, or podcasts you listen to most often.

It is able to predict what upcoming albums you will want to listen to and advertises them so you don’t miss a beat. It can even suggest pre-made Spotify playlists that cover different eras, moods, and genres for those wanting to explore. Users that have the Spotify Premium subscription are given a ‘year wrapped’ chart at the end of every year. It details what they listened to, for how long, and is a nice personal touch that many enjoy receiving. Spotify AI makes it easier to find the perfect jam or some new content, with something for everyone.
